When he appeared before the Serious Offences Court on Wednesday, Nicholas Providence was charged that on Tuesday, November 15 at Belle Isle he had in his possession 1,996 grams of cannabis with intent to supply to another.

Police say that about 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Rapid Response Unit personnel were conducting a routine stop and search when they saw PV35, a Toyota car, travelling in the direction of Barrouallie.

The vehicle was signalled to stop and did so. Providence was seen in the front passenger seat with a black, grey and yellow bag. A search of the bag revealed three brown taped packages, at which point he admitted, “Officer is weed.”

The offence was pointed out and Providence was taken to Chateaubelair Police Station, where the drug was weighed in his presence.

On Wednesday, Providence told the court that he bought the drugs to smoke and boil for his asthma. He explained that the asthma puffs sold in pharmacies tend to cause blockages in his stomach.

This excuse did not sway Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne-Matthias who fined Providence $3,500,

of which $1,500 was to be paid forthwith. In default, he will be imprisoned for nine months.

The balance of the money is to be paid by February 28, 2017; in default he will spend one year in prison.(AS)
