When his client appeared before the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court yesterday, lawyer Jomo Thomas pleaded with magistrate Bertie Pompey to sternly warn, reprimand and discharge Ralston Harry.{{more}}

Pompey, however, saw the need to impose a sanction on Harry, in an effort to put a stop to the offence of assault in society.

“Your lawyer has asked me to be lenient; however, this offence is very prevalent in society and it needs to stop,” the magistrate said.

Harry, a farmer of Questelles, was charged with assaulting Kyda Davis on July 8.

At 10:15 a.m., Davis was in Questelles when she received a call from Harry, with whom she once had a common-law relationship, asking her where she was. She refused to disclose her whereabouts and ended the call.

Later, while Davis was outside hanging out her clothes, she felt someone hit her very hard from behind. When she turned around, she realized it was Harry and he began to beat her about her body.

Following a report to the police, Harry was picked up, informed of the report against him and charged.

During his plea for leniency, Thomas disclosed that both Harry and Davis were in a contentious relationship and have been back and forth with the relationship for many years.

“The two can’t seem to stay away from each other. Both parties need to try and work their relationship out,” the attorney said.

Harry pleaded guilty to the charge against him and was fined $500, to be paid in two weeks.(CA)
