A 22-year-old resident of Chauncey was on Wednesday sent to the Mental Health Centre (MHC) for observation, after he appeared before the Serious Offences Court, charged with assaulting his mother with a knife.

The charge of criminal assault was laid against Javez Charles, after he tried to stab his mother Jayland Charles, with whom he lives.{{more}}

In her evidence, Jayland told the court that she was in her kitchen over the weekend when her son approached her and asked to use her cell phone to call his father.

According to Jayland, when she refused his request, Javez went for a knife and attempted to stab her.

However, Javez stated that he never tried to stab his mother, but only intended to scare her into giving him the phone.

Jayland told the court that her son had never attacked her before; however, last year, he stabbed two persons, who had to be admitted to the Intensive Care Unit of the Milton Cato Memorial Hospital.

After the young man admitted to assaulting his mother, Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne-Matthias reread the assault charge to him in an attempt to get him to change his ‘not guilty’ plea. However, at that point, the prosecution indicated that Javez had previously been released from the MHC.

After questioning the young man about his smoking habits, Browne-Matthias ordered that he be sent back to the MHC for 14 days observation before she makes a ruling.

Javez is expected to return to court on April 26. (AS)
