The Campden Park resident was arrested last Friday at about 6:05 p.m. when the van in which he was travelling was stopped in Layou by police who were conducting a stop and search.

Byron Alexander said he was given the package by his niece, but was unaware of its contents. He explained that after returning from work Friday afternoon, he was given the bag by his niece who told him it contained clothes to deliver to someone. Inside the bag, wrapped in a pair of blue jeans and a striped T-shirt was a transparent plastic bag containing the cannabis.

Alexander, who appeared frail and shaky when he appeared in court, was arrested by PC Lewis and was taken to the Layou Police Station.

However, during yesterday’s hearing, Alexander’s niece stated that she had no dealings with her uncle in relation to the package. Chief magistrate Rechanne Browne-Matthias commented that the niece would be wicked if she had in fact given her uncle the package.

Alexander was discharged with just a reprimand from Matthias-Browne.(CT)
