Broke man to pay $60,000 drug fine

“Miss, I don’t even have 60 cents in my name.”

This was the response of Byera resident Westwick Williams, after Chief Magistrate Rechanne Browne-Matthias, yesterday, fined him $60,000 on a marijuana possession charge.{{more}}

He appeared at the Serious Offences Court and pleaded guilty to having 56,296 grams (114 pounds) of cannabis in his possession on March 1, at the Baleine Mountains.

Browne-Matthias ordered that Williams pay the fine forthwith or spend three years in jail.

According to the information read out in court, at about 6 a.m., Police Constable 403 John and his team of Rapid Response Unit (RRU) officers were on mountain patrol in Baleine when they saw Williams standing inside a hut.

The officers identified themselves to Williams and while searching the hut, three plastic buckets containing the marijuana were found.

When questioned, Williams told officers that the drug belonged to a man with whom he was working. (KW)
