Grenadian national deported
A Grenadian national has been fined and ordered to be removed from the State after pleading guilty to illegal entry into St Vincent and the Grenadines.{{more}}
The matter involving Hubert Frederick, a Carriacou resident, was heard at the Kingstown Magistrateâs Court on Monday, September 22.
The defendant, a sailor by trade, was approched by members of the Rapid Response Unit last Friday, September 19 at approximately 6:15 p.m., as he was walking through the Rose Place area in Kingstown.
When asked to show identification, the 29-year-old had none on his person, and freely admitted to having arrived by boat from Carriacou to Union Island and disembarking without the consent of an immigration officer.
He was subsequently arrested and handed over to immigration authorities.
Lawyer Ronnie Marks, who represented the defendant, pointed out that the Grenadian had only come to spend the weekend with his girlfriend, who lives at Arnos Vale, and had no prior charges or convictions in this jurisdiction.
Marks further said that the offence was not committed in âfurtherance of any other crimeâ and that Frederick had been honest and cooperative with authorities from the moment he was apprehended. In light of such, he requested that the Court show leniency in the matter.
Temporary magistrate Carla James fined Frederick $500 â to be paid forthwith â and issued an order for his removal. Should he default on the fine, he will face one monthâs imprisonment.(JSV)
