Winfield Sam appeared at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court yesterday after being charged on August 20 with using indecent language toward a police officer while in custody at the Criminal Investigations Department at the Central Police Station.

Sam was arrested on August 20, after he got into an altercation with a man whose shoes he had stolen.

According to Sam, he stole the shoes because the man had owed him for some marijuana. He said he was in town with his girlfriend buying a bag for his son when the man appeared and started a fight.

Sam explained that while at the CID, he was trying to explain to the police officer what happened, when he was told to “less his noise”.

He said he continued trying to explain, at which point he claims the police officer ripped his son’s new bag.

Sam said it was then that he (Sam) used indecent language.

As she was about to deliver her judgment, magistrate Rechanne Browne-Matthias asked Sam what was wrong with the police officer asking people to be quiet.

She opined that if Sam had calmed down, the officer would have been able to listen to what he was saying.

“I’m going to take everything in perspective,” the magistrate said.

“Yo war me tell you wah the man do me? The man is a buller man! The man bull me already,” Sam said in court.

Browne-Matthias told Sam that he had “gone too far” and ordered him to pay $400 forthwith or spend two weeks in jail.

As he stepped down from the box, Sam kept repeating “me ain’t get no rights” before he was removed from the court.(BK)
