“Of course, it’s a learning experience and there are moments when you have trying experiences,” she told SEARCHLIGHT.

“In everything you have to be guided by the laws of the state,” Browne- Matthias continued.

Browne-Matthias was speaking following her swearing in ceremony as the magistrate at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, April 2.

She took up duties as magistrate in an acting capacity on February 4.

She said everything has been going well, adding that she will be seeking to work on some outstanding matters that need to be cleared up.

“God willing, once those are dealt with expeditiously, we should be on track with matters coming forward from the court and deal with things in a timely and efficient manner, so that’s what I will be trying to do primarily.”

She credits her family for giving her the support and encouragement.

She named former senior magistrate, Donald Browne, who is her uncle, as one of her mentors.

“In everything, even when there is a little challenge, I seek his advice,” Browne-Matthias said.

She lauded the staff at the magistrate’s court, saying that the officers of the court have been working well to ensure that order is maintained.

And while admitting that coming in after the former senior magistrate may be quite the task to fill, she is looking to do the best she can under the given circumstances.

Before taking up the post of magistrate, Browne-Matthias served as the temporary president of the family court.(DD)
