Police Constable faces court on marijuana charge
Another member of the Royal St Vincent and the Grenadines Force has found himself on the wrong side of the law.{{more}}
On Tuesday, Police Constable Kenitsh Pompey of Lowmans Windward appeared before the Kingstown Magistrates Court, charged with two counts of marijuana possession.
Pompey, who is attached to the fire department, is charged with possession of 28 grams of cannabis at Port Elizabeth, Bequia, on March 30.
He was also jointly charged with Ryan Douglas, 23, of Byera for possession of 466 grams of cannabis, also at Bequia on March 30.
Douglas pleaded guilty to that charge and the prosecution withdrew that charge from Pompey, after he pleaded not guilty to both charges.
Senior Magistrate at the Kingstown Magistrateâs Court Rechanne Browne-Matthias granted Pompey bail in the sum of $3,000 and ordered Pompey to report to the Biabou Police Station on Mondays and Fridays.
He was also ordered to surrender his travel documents.
Pompey will next appear at the Serious Offences Court for hearing of his matter on May 13.
The court heard that at approximately 7:30 p.m on Saturday, police officers on patrol at the main wharf in Bequia saw when the vessel, Bequia Express docked at the wharf. Douglas and Pompey disembarked the boat together and one of the police officers smelled the odour of cannabis coming from a bag Douglas was carrying. The police officer also saw when Douglas handed the bag to Pompey.
Police immediately approached the men and took them to the Port Elizabeth Police Station.
While there, a search was conducted on the bag and the cannabis was found wrapped in plastic.
Douglas admitted the drug belonged to him.
Magistrate Browne-Matthias fined Douglas $800 forthwith or in default, he will spend one month in prison.
Pompey was also searched and police say 28 grams of marijuana was found in his pocket.
On March 25, three police officers of the Criminal Investigations Department of the local constabulary also appeared before the court on criminal charges.
Sergeant 151 Julius Morgan, along with police constables 335 Orlando Collins and 45 Adrian Forde, were brought before the Serious Offences Court on charges pertaining to the shooting of Corporal 351 Milford Edwards, a member of the Narcotics Unit (Drug Squad), on December 5, 2012.(KW)
