Vincentians nabbed in Barbados drug busts

Two Vincentian nationals are among four men now in the custody of the Barbadian Police, after being intercepted by the Barbadian Coast Guard.{{more}}

According to the Barbadian Police, the men, who also include two Barbadian nationals, were intercepted 6 miles north of St Lucy, during the wee hours of the morning of Tuesday, July 17.

The operation, which was a joint operation between the Royal Barbados Police Force and the Coast Guard, turned up 1,394 pounds of cannabis, which was contained in 33 polythene bags.

Barbadian police also indicated that a fifth man fell, or went overboard during the chase, and while the identity of that individual is yet to be ascertained, it is believed that the person may be a Vincentian national.

Up to press time on Wednesday, the men were yet to be charged, the Police said.

Meanwhile, another Vincentian national is expected to reappear in the Barbadian court on August 13, after being apprehended during a drug bust at Heywoods beach on Saturday, July 14.

Police indicate that 31-year-old Deon Soleyn of Belair, along with Barbadians Carlos Douglin, 35, David Springer, 28 and Eric Llewellyn Jemmott, 48 were each charged with possession of 307 pounds of cannabis.

They were charged with possession, possession with intent to supply, trafficking and importation.

Soleyn and Douglin received additional charges, including entering except at a port entry and disembarking without the consent of an Immigration Officer.

Four other Barbadian nationals were arrested and are now on remand here in St Vincent and the Grenadines after Coast Guard officials intercepted their boat off the northern coast of St Vincent on July 13, carrying 1,706 pounds of cannabis. (DD)
