Police Constable 676 Kelroy Sam has been placed on suspension with half month’s pay, after being slapped with three criminal charges at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, February 28.{{more}}

Sam is charged with assaulting Keon Dennie of Barrouallie on July 31, 2011. He was also charged with assaulting Harry John of Diamond and unlawfully and maliciously wounding Arlington Lotmore of Paul’s Avenue, also on July 31, 2011.

He pleaded not guilty to all three charges.

Bail was set at $5,000.

Prosecutor at the court Inspector Glenford Gregg explained to Senior Magistrate Donald Browne that the charges arise from cross complaints.

He said that the matters were sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions for direction and the police were later instructed to charge Sam.

After exiting the court, apparently recognising media photographers stationed outside, Sam turned his back and began speaking to another police officer.

His family also attempted to hide the man’s face by placing umbrellas in front of his face.

One woman shouted: “Why you want to take his picture, he ain’t do nothing…”

Sam said: “I don’t want my photo taken.”

Magistrate Browne instructed Sam to stay away from the complainants in the matter.

The matter was adjourned to June 25 for hearing.
