The Cane End resident pleaded guilty to possession of 204 grams of cannabis when he appeared at the Serious Offences Court on Friday, February 17.

The man was jointly charged with Bernadette Scott. She pleaded not guilty and the charge against her was withdrawn.

The court heard that police officers from the Criminal Investigations Department went to Scott’s home to execute a search warrant.

During a search of the bedroom, a bag of cannabis was found. When cautioned, Scott admitted that the drug belonged to him and it was it was for a “smoke”.

Chief Magistrate Sonya Young asked why the woman was brought to court after Scott admitted to the drug.

The arresting officer, who was summoned to the witness box, told the court that he arrested both individuals because they occupied the same bedroom. The officer said he was instructed to charge them both.

He added that he did not think the decision was a wise one to charge the woman, even after it was discussed.
