Prison officer charged

The matter against prison officer George Caesar should come to an end today at the Kingstown Magistrate’s Court.{{more}}

Caesar, who has been employed at the prisons for the past 17 years, is charged for conveying one Motorola VR50 cellular phone battery into Her Majesty’s Prison to facilitate the escape of convicted murderer Bain. He also pleaded not guilty to conveying one Sony Ericsson cellular phone into Her Majesty’s Prison with intent to facilitate the escape of Sheldon “Dutch” Bain.

Bain, a Grenadian fugitive, was convicted in December 2008 in the High Court for the murder of taxi operator, Peter “Kazaman” Joseph at Cane Hall in 2004. He had managed to escape from the Richmond Hill Prison in Grenada in 2004 while awaiting sentencing for the murder of Vincentian trafficker Omelia Roberts of Belmont.

Bain, in his evidence refuted claims that he knew anything about the phone or battery. He further added that he only had conversations with George only about prison duties.

Also giving evidence was Superintendent of Prisons Eric Rodriguez, who said that he and Caesar had conversations about bringing cell phones into the prison and that it was unauthorized.

Lawyer Ronald Marks represents Caesar in the matter.
