Grenadian finds greener pastures in St. Vincent

After pleading guilty to possession of 59 pounds of cannabis at the Serious Offences Court on Wednesday, the Grenadian told Chief Magistrate Sonya Young that he came to these shores because life in Grenada is hard. “Times hard in Grenada…I went to Carriacou and meet some friends there who tell me weed does go to St Vincent,” Carion explained.

Carion also pleaded guilty to entering the state illegally and to cultivating five plants of cannabis. He was sentenced to two years imprisonment for the 59 pounds of cannabis, three months on the illegal plants and a five-month sentence for entering the state without consent of the Immigration Department. The sentences will run concurrently.

At about 8am on January 19, police officers on patrol in the Morne Ronde Mountains saw Carion come out of a hut and begin to plow a marijuana field.

Officers approached Carion and cautioned him in respect of the plants. He replied: “Officer, all ah dem weed ah mine and me come fo try mek a living”. He was then carried to the hut, and two plastic buckets of dried marijuana were found. He was cautioned for a second time and Carion told officers: “Me ain’t tell alyo already? De weed is mine”.(KW)
