Isaacs to pay $1500 for assualting policeman
For what his lawyer described as a monumental act of stupidity, Alvis Isaac is counting his lucky stars that he did not receive a custodial sentence for assaulting a police officer.
Instead, Isaacs was fined $1500 to be paid in three months, or he will spend six months in prison. {{more}}He pleaded guilty when he appeared at the Serious Offences Court on Wednesday before Chief Magistrate Sonya Young.
Isaacs, 19, labourer of Yambou, was arrested and charged with assaulting a police officer by pointing a Bird Gun at him on December 23, 2007, at about 11:30am at Yambou.
On the date of the offence, the officer, dressed in plain clothes, was walking about 15 feet away from where the defendant was sitting on the back of a truck.
Isaacs then pointed the gun at the officer and squeezed the trigger. Luckily no pellets were in the gun.
The young manâs lawyer, Ronald Marks, said that his client thought at the time it was funny brandishing a gun for whatever reason. âHe decided to point it at a passerby and did not even know it was a officer dressed in plain clothes, who was armed,â Marks said. However, Marks told the court that his client did not waste the courtâs time and asked the court to impose a fine.(KW)
