On October 2, 2007, the 38-year-old man was found guilty of incest and unlawful sexual intercourse with a girl under the age of 13.

Justice Gertel Thom handed down the judgment last Thursday at the High Court during a sentencing hearing. Ten-year sentences were given for each charge, which would run concurrently.

The offence occurred between March 3 and 6 last year, when it was said that the young girl went with her father and brother to a shop in the neighbourhood sometime after 2pm to purchase household items. After returning from the shop, she told the court that she and her younger brother were looking at television for a while.

The girl told the court she went to sleep later that night in one of the bedrooms. She then recalled being awakened by the feel of someone over her and saw it was her father.

She said her dad had already sloughed off her nightwear and underwear. She said her dad started having sex with her for about five minutes.

The girl said after all that took place, she went into the bathroom and washed off her skin and went back to bed.

It was not until she went to her aunt’s home the following Monday that the matter was reported to the police.(KW)
