Hotel receptionist jailed

Twenty-two-year-old Kendall David, a receptionist at the New Montrose Hotel was given a jail sentence of three months for theft.

When he appeared before Chief Magistrate Simone Churaman at the Serious Crimes Offence Court in Kingstown last Tuesday, he pleaded guilty to the offence.##:[more]##

The court heard that on Sunday 4 December at about 3:15 p.m., a co-worker of the defendant collected US$700 from someone and placed the money in a filing cabinet in the manager’s office. The next day she returned to the cabinet to retrieve the money only to find it missing.

The matter was reported to the manager who subsequently reported it to the police. When questioned, the defendant admitted to having the money in his possession. He was arrested and charged for the offence. The money was recovered.

When asked by Magistrate Churaman why he stole the money, he replied, “I was in the process of trying to go and sail so I took the money.” David has been an employee at the hotel for the past one and a half years.
