Jamaican man jailed for attempted theft

Rexron Williams, a Jamaican citizen was found guilty of attempted theft and for damaging a section of a glass door, property of the Government of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Chief Magistrate Simone Churaman sentenced Williams to two months imprisonment and a fine of $300 forthwith at the Calliaqua Magistrate’s Court on Monday June 27.{{more}}

The court heard that on June 24,, Police officers were on foot patrol in the Biabou area on the Windward side of the island when they saw Williams pushing his hands into a lady’s bag. The officers rushed to the assistance of the lady who was at the bus stop awaiting transportation to the capital.

When questioned by the Police about his pick pocketing, Williams told the Police to give him a chance. According to Station Sergeant Butcher, when Williams was brought to the Calliaqua Police station for further questioning, he told the Policemen that he does not want to go back to Jamaica, for fear he would be killed. Williams dismissed this allegation.

Police noted that Williams tried to escape from custody while at the Criminal Investigation Department at Police Headquarters in Kingstown. While being restrained he smashed the glass door at the Police station.

Williams, a musician, said that he came to St. Vincent from Martinique where he was on a tour with his band. He has been here for the past three months, and was staying at an apartment in the Cane Garden area.

Williams told the Calliaqua court that he had a reservation to leave the country the following week.
