Montrose man gets 12 years

Carlos Deshong, a young man of New Montrose, Kingstown, is now serving a 12-year jail sentence handed down on him on Tuesday, June 7. However since he was on remand that sentence will include time served from May 2003. {{more}}

Deshong pleaded not guilty to murder, but guilty to manslaughter and, following an impassioned plea for mitigation by his defence team, led by Andrew Cummings, Justice Frederick-Bruce Lyle made his ruling.

Deshong was charged with murder in connection with the death of David Delpesche who succumbed to gunshot wounds in New Montrose on May 14, 2003.

Cummings painted an almost impeccable picture of DeShong. He described a quiet youngster, skilled in football and nephew of former national footballer Guy Lowe and of a person who had been gainfully employed since he graduated from school.

The Prosecution noted that there was an ongoing dispute between the two men, and that on the fateful day, Delepsche alighted from a public transport vehicle with a cutlass.

Deshong fired a shot and Delpesche ran but the shot turned out to be fatal. Delpesche’s corpse was recovered from a gutter in New Montrose.
