Unlicenced driver jailed for two months

A Colonarie man who was caught driving without a licence three times in the past three months and prohibited from holding a driver’s permit twice in the last two months was jailed this week.{{more}}

Omroy Davis Barker was sentenced to two months when he appeared before the Serious Offences Court Tuesday, charged for breaching an order of the court.

Station Sergeant Calvin Glasgow from the Traffic Branch told the court that on November 19, last year, Barker was convicted in the Kingstown Magistrate Court for driving motor vehicle PK587 without a driver’s permit and without insurance. He was disqualified from obtaining a permit for one year. In December, he was again convicted for driving the said vehicle while being disqualified. As a result, he was sentenced to two months. He appealed the sentence and was released, pending a hearing.

Station Sergeant Glasgow further told the court that on January 20, at about 11:25 p.m., Barker was again driving PK587 when he lost control and collided with motor vehicle H9184 at Sion Hill. He fled the scene and influenced one Matthis Jackson of Mt. Grennan to tell the police that he was driving the vehicle.

According to Station Sergeant Glasgow, Jackson went to the police station and claimed he was driving PK587 when it collided with H9184. However, the driver of H9184 and a passenger identified Barker as the driver.

Chief Magistrate Simone Churaman stated that the matter was very serious and, in the circumstances, a custodial penalty seemed most appropriate.
