Teenager charged with armed robbery
Nineteen-year-old Sonnel Caine of Dauphine was on Tuesday arrested and charged in Saturdayâs robbery which left Dauphine businessman Godrick Nichols with seven bullets in his body.
Caine was taken before the Serious Offences Court Tuesday, charged with robbery and unlawful and malicious wounding with intent. {{more}}
Police prosecutor Adolphus Delpesche strongly objected to bail on the grounds that Nichols was hospitalised in an âextremely criticalâ condition, with two broken legs and a piece of lead still lodged in his groin. He added that police were still looking for
another man involved in the crime.
Sergeant Delpesche also reminded Chief Magistrate Simone Churaman that there was an upsurge in violent crimes in the society, many of which were gun-related.
According to information received, at about 3.15 a.m. Saturday, Nichols was about to close his business place when Caine and another man, armed with guns, walked in and demanded money. Nichols ran and they chased him. They cornered him in a corridor and Caine opened fire on him.
Police said Caine lived near Nichols and that Nichols knew him.
Caine has been remanded in custody until January 26, next year, when preliminary inquiries are set to begin.
