Dunbar appeal dismissed

The Philmore Dunbar appeal against conviction and sentence in the murder of a double amputee, retired nurse Marjorie Ince of Vermont, was among some 59 cases listed for the September sitting of the East Caribbean Court which is expected to end this week’s sitting here Friday 24th {{more}}
In the Dunbar matter, he was sentenced to life imprisonment last year after a jury found him guilty of the murder. He was not represented at the hearing in which his appeal was dismissed.
The court began sitting here Monday morning with the the matter of Ken Baker, whose 12-year rape sentence was quashed last November; the appeal against conviction and sentence filed by Deidrick Debique of Troumaca who was jailed earlier this year for unlawful sexual intercourse; and the application for discontinuance of the Appeal in the matter involving former Chairman of the National Commercial Bank Richard Joachim and the Attorney General Judith Jones-Morgan.
Meanwhile, as part of the session to mark the September sitting of the Court of Appeal, members of the local Bar Association paid tribute to the late Human Rights President Victor Cuffy. It was the first court proceeding since last Friday’s ceremony to mark the start of the 2004-2005 law year.
Acting Director of Public Prosecutions Colin Williams showered praise on Cuffy describing him as a humble, loyal and great humanitarian.
President of the local Bar Association and newly elected President of the Human Rights Association, Nicole Sylvester also commended Cuffy’s work. She called her predecessor a man of conscience and character and added that he was not concerned about popularity, and was firmly opposed to the death penalty.
The sitting of the Appeal Court was presided over by the Vincentian acting Chief Justice Honourable Adrian Saunders, and Justices Brian Alleyne and Michael Gordon.
