Police arrest EHSM student

An 18-year-old third-form student of Emmanuel High School Mesopotamia (EHSM) was last Friday arrested and charged by Mesopotamia police for drug possession.
Reports say the student, who lives in the Marriaqua Valley, was held for questioning last Friday in connection with a report involving him and another student. When police searched him, a bag containing eight grams of marijuana was found in the back pocket of his school pants.{{more}}
The student was taken before Chief Magistrate Simone Churaman at the Serious Offences Court in Kingstown on Monday, charged with possessing eight grams of marijuana. He pleaded guilty to the charge.
The student was placed on bond for one year in the sum of $500. If he breaches the bond, he would be required to pay the $500 immediately upon conviction, failing which he would be imprisoned for three months.
That student was the second Emmanuel High School Mesopotamia (EHSM) student to have been taken before the Serious Offence Court within months. Earlier this year, a fourth form student from Lowmans Hill had a suspended sentence imposed on him after he pleaded guilty to possessing and discharging a firearm in public.
The student, dressed in uniform, had discharged a firearm at someone at the crowded bus terminal in capital, Kingstown one Friday afternoon.
Following his conviction, the school’s principal said she would have expelled him because the school did not wish to have convicted criminals as part of its student body.
