Serving community is Rotary Club’s goal

The Rotary Club of St Vincent South was chartered on December 8, 1995, with 30 members.

Since then the club has undertaken numerous community service projects in partnership with other Rotary clubs in St Vincent and overseas as well as with local firms and organisations. {{more}}

On Thursday, February 8, the club had its biggest community service project to date with the handing over of a substantial quantity of medical supplies and equipment to the Kingstown General Hospital. These supplies and equipment were procured by the Rotary Clubs of Portsmouth Virginia and the Rotary Club of Churchland in Portsmouth Virginia USA.

The handing over ceremony was addressed by Prime Minister Arhnim Eustace, Rtn. David Robin President of the Club. The ceremony was also addressed by Rtn Bill Clare of the Rotary club of Portsmouth Virginia in a live link up with representatives of the donor clubs in Virginia compliments of Cable & Wireless Teleconferencing facilities. The medical equipment were received by Mr. Brenton Bailey, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health and the Environment. The club’s collaboration with the Rotary Club of Portsmouth Virginia started in 1996 and has included prior donations of medical equipment and supplies to the KGH and the Lewis Punnett Home.

It is also not the first time that the Club has facilitated donations to the Health Sector. In August 2000 the Club in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Westminster in Colorado donated 20 computers and printers complete with software, nine televisions with VCR capabilities and special software to the Ministry of Health to assist in its health informatics programme. This donation was valued at EC$163,000. The computers provided were installed at the KGH, School of Nursing and strategically at Health centres and clinics throughout the state. The visiting health care team also assisted with design of a patient database and trained staff in using the health software and conducting medical research through the internet. Cable & Wireless also provided Internet access of $60 per month per computer to facilitate access to health information on the Internet.

RCSVS AND YOUTH

The club is committed to the development of youth in St Vincent. It has undertaken several projects benefiting youths throughout the country.

Some of these include career guidance and vocational training in secondary schools and sponsorship of a Youth Environmental Award. It has also been very active in donating computers to schools between 1996 and 2000. A Rotarian Doug Terman of Wakefield was instrumental in obtaining the first set of computers. The largest contribution was the establishment of a computer lab at the St Martin’s Secondary School.

The club has held an annual Christmas party and distribution of toys to under privileged children in rural St Vincent for the last three years. This project has been in partnership with FEDEX which transported the toys free of cost.

More recently the club has donated in excess of 11,000 children books value at $50000 to the Chief Librarian for placement in rural libraries. These books were sourced by the Rotary club of Stoufville.
