Emancipation celebrations kick off this Sunday

Emancipation month activities officially begin Sunday, August 1 with a rally at Heritage Square in Kingstown at 6 p.m.
Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonsalves and Minister of Tourism and Culture Rene Baptiste will deliver addresses. Cultural presentations will be made by a number of community and cultural organisations. {{more}}
Emancipation month activities are being held under the theme: “Understanding our past – Shaping our future – celebrating our cultures.”
One feature this year is the re-enactment of Captain Bligh’s arrival to St. Vincent and the Grenadines. In addition, the WAVES Theatre Guild will present two plays at the Peace Memorial Hall in commemoration of Emancipation Day.
Mobile exhibition organised by the public library, and featuring literature on local and Caribbean history will also form part of the calendar of activities.
A memorial service at the Black Point Tunnel is set for August 8 while on 22, the first Breadfruit Festival and Folklore Day takes place at Park Hill.
