Javorne is Queen

Javorne Williams’ capture of the Miss St. Vincent and the Grenadines crown last Saturday night at Carni-val City, Victoria Park, came as a surprise to the 19-year-old Enhams resident, just as it did to patrons.
Now, Williams will be looking to cop the Miss Carival title. A win by the new queen at the Miss Carival show slated for Friday, July 2, will make it a hattrick for this country.{{more}}
According to the upper-six Community College student who was sponsored by Mariners Hotel and Empire Cigarettes, “It’s such a great feeling to win Miss SVG and I’m gonna do even better at Miss Carival.” She starts preparing for Miss Carival tomorrow.
“I did not hear when the MC called my name and said that I had won. It was Aiesha (another contestant) who told me that I had won; I could not believe it,” said Williams.
Hoping to now pursue a career in journalism at the University of the West Indies Mona, Jamaica, Williams explained that you can safely describe her feelings on Saturday night and still at this point in time as “ecstatic.
“It’s a great feeling to win Miss SVG,” said Williams who told SEARCHLIGHT that she would encourage anyone to enter as preparations for the pageant and the pageant itself helps in the boost of confidence and the building of self-esteem.
“You gain a lot from being in Miss SVG; I think that it makes you a better person,” said Williams who is still trying to get over the fact that she won.
Gaining the top spot in the Carnival Development Corporation show earned Williams, among other things: a full scholarship, EC$8000 and a trip for two. According to her, “I would like to pursue the scholarship right now but I have my year’s reign to do first.”
The elated Miss SVG 2004, who also won the Miss Community Spirited award, is the youngest in a family of five sisters and two brothers. She thanked among other persons, her mother Louise, her chaperone Samantha Robertson (who won Miss SVG in 1990), her sponsors, CDC and the staff at Suzanne’s Hair Studio.
Second place or first runner-up in the show was Miss Set For Life Deon Paul. Paul, who was always a favourite, has entered numerous shows and currently wears the crown of Miss Marriaqua 2003. The Richland Park beauty, en route to her second-place position, also took the Miss Photogenic prize and scored the most in the swimwear category.
Third was Miss Roy’s Inn Janelle Allen, the Arnos Vale resident who is currently a junior clerk and hopes to pursue studies in psychology, scored the most points in the interview and was also judged Miss Congeniality.
Andria Antrobus with her pan rendition got the nod for best talent while the judges also agreed that she had the best evening gown.
The show, which carried the theme “Miss SVG-More for 2004” saw four other contestants. They were Miss Irie Travel Nyasha Holder, Miss Mustique Company Limited Aiesha King, Miss Voyager Lisa Joseph and Miss Metrocint General Insurance Company Limited Keisha Bacchus.
The MCs for the show were lawyer Colin Williams and Cleo Jones-Huggins. There were also performances by the Nestle Avenues Dancers, H.S. Phactor and Poorsah. Jamaican reggae star Eric Donaldson also provided top class entertainment.
