Children get it Right

Children in St. Vincent and the Grenadines have an avenue to display their artistic talents, assert their rights, and get rewards for their effort.
This year a poster competition based on the theme, “My Rights As a Child”, was held here, and there are plans to make it an annual affair.{{more}}
It was a creation of Family Court President Sharon Cummings, developed from a conference in April during Child Month. It was a coordination of the Family Court and the Bar Association.
Children between ages five and 14 were invited to take part in the competition. About 70 students sent in entries.
LaFerne Cato, acting on behalf of the Family Court, commended the schools for their participation. She singled out the Calder Government School, which sent in over 35 entries. And their interest was well justified. Shurwin Mapp, a 12-year-old Calder student, won the 10- to 12-age category. His schoolmates Vorne McQuire and Mickey Lewis, both 11 years, took the second and third prizes to highlight the institution’s dominance of the event.
Another youngster with a flair for art is five-year-old Arielle Roberts, a Kingstown Preparatory School student.
Arielle beat two Calder students – eight-year-old Marlon Roberts and nine- year-old Sylborne Yearwood – in the five- to nine-year-old category.
The promotion enjoyed the support of Cable & Wireless who sponsored prizes for the top three in: five to nine, and 10 to 12 age groups.
President’s Special Prizes went to Brittany Lulley of the Bequia Seventh Day Adventist Primary School; Jomar Pope, Kingstown Anglican School; Jameisha Lewis, Bequia Anglican Primary School; Vakeesha John, Layou Government; and Taj Lee, St. Mary’s Roman Catholic School.
