Hotel Bigsand- welcome to peace and tranquility

Need to get away?
Why not try Hotel Bigsand, a collection of ten romantic beachfront suites located on Union Island.
With a luxurious design, Bigsand offers privacy for couples in love, space if you decide to bring the family or an astonishing array of land and water sports along with land and sea day tours. Patrons who have the opportunity to retreat to this peaceful Grenadine island getaway can go fishing, scuba diving, snorkelling, sailing, canoeing and water-skiing among other activities. {{more}}Appropriate equipment for cycling, volleyball and table tennis are all available.
To put it simply, “A grand time awaits visitors to Union Island’s Hotel Bigsand.”
Journey to Union Island as a guest at Bigsand and you’ll be chauffeured by the hotel’s staff to the hotel where a luxurious suite awaits you. It is furnished with antiques from Europe and natural stones from France, which gather your attention as you walk into the living room. Marble tiles from Portugal greet you on entering the bedrooms, designed to be extremely romantic.
Belgian-born Johan Naert is the proprietor of the beachfront destination, which has been open for about a year and a half now. Costing around EC$3,000,000, the selection of eight ocean front rooms, one executive suite and a honeymoon suite are complemented by a Tobago Cays and Ocean view along with a stretch of pristine white-sand beach. Friendly staff cater to your every wish.
The rooms offer a fully equipped kitchen with a mini-bar, toaster, coffee maker, stove, microwave oven and a spacious living/dining area. Air-conditioning, ceiling fans, telephone, cable TV, Internet access and an in-room safe are also pluses to the luxurious destination.
Naert grew up on a farm on the Dutch side of Belgium. At the tender age of 12 he took up the responsibility of helping his mother run the farm when his father became ill.
Eventually learning a trade, the skilled builder for a while took on the feat of restoring old houses in his country, hence the antique qualities at Bigsand.
Naert’s love for travelling is what eventually led him to Union Island where he acquired the beachfront property and developed it into what he describes as “a traveller’s paradise”.
The hotel is filled with things to do on a daily basis. One does not have to worry about being out of touch, as the hotel provides a cellular phone which allows contact if you decide to take the ferry to neighbouring Carriacou or a tour of beautiful unspoilt Union Island.
“A lot of honeymoon couples come here,” says Naert. He also spoke about persons requesting rooms that actors of the box office hit “Pirates of the Caribbean” had occupied during the filming of the movie in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
The hotel, however, lacks one thing: a jetty that would allow yachts and other sea craft to dock. Naert said they were denied permission to build the much-needed jetty.
“Without this jetty,” says Naert, “the hotel will not be able to function properly as we are a beach front hotel that would most likely attract yachts.”
He said the building of the private wharf would be a definite plus to the hotel, which offers free meals to the captains of yachts who come to dine with guests (for groups of seven or more).
The father of two children, Pauline (8) and Gonas (11), describes Union Island as, “A very nice place where the people are friendly.
“There is always someplace to go and you can tour the island or settle down and listen to some soothing pan music,” he says.
The resort offers couples and families all the comfort and privacy in a beautiful tropical setting that can also be turned into the perfect setting for a birthday party, wedding, anniversary and other special occasions.
