Home dental remedies

There is no replacement for visiting your dentist, but there are some home remedies that can prove to be useful. These remedies should be looked at as an adjunct to traditional dental care or used in a an emergency when seeking attention is not an option. There are many dental remedies that can be followed to cure many oral diseases.{{more}}

Green tea: Green tea is famous for its weight loss effects. Not many people know that it is good even for fighting dental cavities, by getting rid of bacteria, which grow due to food particles that linger in our mouth after eating.

Cloves: If you have toothache, or you are teething, you can use clove oil on the affected area, to ease your pain.

Parsley: Fresh parsley is good for your breath. You can chew parsley after meals to keep your breath sweet and clean.

Licorice: Licorice is also a breath sweetener and is found in many toothpastes and mouthwashes.

Salt: Add about 1 teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water, and use it to rinse your mouth. It provides relief for toothache and bleeding gums.

Baking soda: baking soda can be used to whiten your teeth. You can make a paste of baking soda with water, and use it like regular toothpaste. You can also mix salt and baking soda to make it even more effective. Mix salt and baking soda in the ratio of 1:2. Add a few drops of water, to give it the texture of paste. Use this paste with a toothbrush, to brush your teeth. This mixture removes plaque effectively.

Vinegar: Vinegar is used when you have a toothache. Mix two tablespoons and a tablespoon of salt in four ounces of warm water, and rinse your mouth with it. You will feel relieved from your toothache.

Ice: Ice has been used for ages to prevent pain. Simply place an ice bag on your face, wherever you’re feeling pain. In some cases, if there is a bit of swelling on the face, ice will reduce the swelling as well.

Apples: Chewing an apple, within an hour after having a meal, cleans your mouth and helps in keeping the bacteria away.

Orange peel: To whiten your teeth, rub the white inside of the orange rinds against your teeth. Let it stay for a few minutes, and then rinse your mouth.

Strawberries: They are not readily available here in St Vincent and the Grenadines, but if you have any, make a paste of a few strawberries and rub on your teeth. Let it stay for five minutes, and then rinse with water mixed with a pinch of baking soda. This will whiten your teeth.

Lemon juice: To cure bleeding gums, mix the juice of half a lemon in a cup of water, and drink it.

Milk: Milk is rich in calcium, and calcium is very important for dental health. You can also go for other milk products, like cheese, yogurt, butter etc.
