Canine Leptospirosis

Leptospirosis is a contagious bacterial disease that is capable of affecting both man and other animals.
It is considered a zoonoses, meaning that it may spread from animals (dogs) to human and from human to animals. {{more}}For this reason it is very important to protect your animal against this disease and by so doing protect your health and that of your family.
Dogs (puppies and adults) of all ages may be affected; however, males are at a higher risk.
The bacteria that cause this disease are normally found in the urine of infected animals. Rats normally carry these bacteria. After urinating the bacteria contaminate the water, food and the animal’s surroundings.
The trouble with these bacteria is their ability to penetrate the skin of anyone or any animal that may come in contact with it.
The signs of this disease are: weakness, anorexia, vomiting, a temperature of 39.5 – 40 C, mild conjunctivitis and most significantly the animal’s body takes on a deep yellowish colour.
This disease may be prevented through proper vaccination of your dogs and by controlling the rat population through the adequate usage of rodenticide that your dogs may not ingest.
