GRENADA: Former PM in “good spirits” after flu, family death contributed to collapse
While addressing supporters in Happy Hill, Grenada, on Monday, March 17, Former Prime Minister Dr Keith Mitchell collapsed after stating, “Sisters and brothers, I’m blacking out”.
Although his condition is being closely monitored, he is reportedly in good spirits and is expected to make a full recovery.
After informing the audience that he was blacking out, there was a brief burst of applause before attendees realised he was losing consciousness.
The Caribbean National Weekly (CNW) suggested that the audience may have misinterpreted his words and believed that the 78-year-old had announced his retirement from politics.
According to a statement from the opposition, the New National Party (NNP), Mitchell had been battling the flu but remained focused on delivering his speech last Monday. It added that he was emotionally overwhelmed following the passing of a close family member on Sunday night, March 16.
Mitchell resigned last month as the NNP’s Opposition Leader, passing the torch to the party’s first female leader, Hon. Emmalin Pierre. He remains a member of parliament for St George North West.
The current Prime Minister, Dickon Mitchell, in response to the incident, acknowledged Keith’s collapse and wished him a speedy recovery, urging Grenadians to keep the former and longest-serving Prime Minister in their thoughts and prayers.
