Three tremors recorded after 5.6 earthquake rocks Jamaica
Classes were suspended and several buildings evacuated after a major earthquake rocked Jamaica on Monday, October 30.
The Earthquake Unit at the University of the West Indies reported that the quake struck at 10:57 a.m. and was located approximately 10km south of Buff Bay, Portland.
Images and videos have been shared on social media platforms showing evacuated buildings with some reports of damage.
The Kingston Public Hospital reported an increase of people seeking medical attention from panic and asthma attacks arising from the morning’s earthquake.
Prime Minister, Andrew Holness updated the country on the extent of the damage on Monday afternoon, noting that there had been no deaths and “minor damage” from the seismic event.
Holness said all the necessary protocols have been activated and disruptions in electricity and internet have been restored for the most part. He said the country’s airports remain open.
PM Holness urged citizens to remain alert as there could be aftershocks.
