Are we on a Covid-19 vacation?

Are we on a Covid-19 vacation or do people understand the objective behind the social distancing measures that have been put in place? These closures are all attempts to force social distancing, a crucially important public health intervention that can help stop transmission of the coronavirus. Social distancing, health authorities argue, can dramatically slow the rate at which the infection spread helping to ease the burden of the health care system.

However, students who should be present for online classes are out running errands for their parents or on play dates. Employees who should be at home thus reducing public contact are out and about more than they would when they are actually at work. One wonders whether employees were given basic rules of engagement before they were sent home, whether parents understand that their children are not yet on summer holiday and whether everyone realizes that we all have a responsibility for the health and wellbeing of ourselves and others.

Vox, in a recent article titled “What are the rules of social distancing”, share the opinion of experts on questions healthy people are asking as it relates to social distancing: Here are the two I find most applicable to our audience.

I feel healthy. Why shouldn’t I get out a little bit to make this time pass easier? Leah Lagos, a New York City-based psychologist and author said staying home as much as possible, even if you believe you are not infected, is the type of altruistic decision that, when performed en masse, has the potential to slow the infection rate. Lagos added, It’s a term known as “flattening the curve.”

Should I cancel play dates? What are the rules for my children? Alyssa F. Westring and Stewart D. Friedman, co-authors of Parents Who Lead, writing in the Harvard Business Review, recommended finding inventive ways for children to play together virtually.

It is not too late for companies that have employees on rotational work or remote work to set out clear expectations and to stress the objective behind social distancing. Parents who understand the importance of social distancing should communicate the same to their children.

Remember, the risks of under-reaction are so much more catastrophic than the risks of overreaction.
