New traffic signs expected to enhance road safety

The Traffic Department of the Royal Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force (RSVGPF) received a donation of nine traffic signs from the Insurance Association of St. Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) Inc.

The handing over ceremony, held at the Central Police Station on Wednesday August 28, 2024, marks a significant step forward in the nation’s ongoing efforts to enhance road safety.

In her opening remarks, Vice President Desra Glasgow emphasized the critical role the Insurance Association plays not only in regulating the insurance industry but also in addressing broader
societal issues, such as road safety.

“Traffic signs are not merely markers; they are essential tools for ensuring the safety and well-being of all road users. This initiative is a testament to our commitment to reducing accidents and promoting safer driving habits across St. Vincent and the Grenadines,” Glasglow stated.

SOP Junior Simmons, speaking on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, lauded the initiative, emphasizing the significance of the collaboration between the RSVGPF and the Insurance Association.

He noted that the newly installed traffic signs would serve as vital reminders for motorists to exercise caution, ultimately contributing to safer roads.

“These signs are a visual reminder of the need for vigilance and responsibility on our roads. We are grateful for this initiative and hope it is the first of many contributions to come.”

Fidel Taylor, Chief Executive Officer of Sentry Insurance and co-sponsor of the signs, underscored the insurance industry’s concern about the increasing number of motor vehicle accidents, particularly those involving inexperienced drivers.

He noted that Sentry Insurance, as the second-largest provider of motor vehicle insurance in SVG, has seen a significant rise in claims, which directly affects the industry’s financial stability.

Taylor emphasized that these traffic signs are part of a broader strategy to mitigate risks and encourage safer driving practices among all road users.

Assistant Superintendent of Police Parnel Browne acknowledged the Insurance Association’s role in the
initiative and the positive impact it would have on reducing road accidents in the country.

The handing over ceremony was attended by members of the Insurance Association’s Executive,
including Vice President Ms. Desra Glasgow, along with representatives from Gulf Insurance
Limited, WAD Agencies, Sentry Insurance, Caribbean Alliance, and Metrocint General
Insurance Company Ltd.

The RSVGPF was represented by the Commissioner of Police (Ag), Mr. Enville Williams, and other high-ranking officials, including Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Mr. Parnel Browne, Officer in Charge of the Traffic Department.
