Twenty-two Vincentians hoping to gain work in the Canadian migrant farm workers’ programme have received certificates of completion of the seasonal agriculture workers training programme.

The certificates were handed out last Thursday, November 26 at the Fisheries Conference room upstairs the Kingstown Fish Market after the group completed the final part of the training, which was aimed at instilling knowledge on occupational safety and health (OSH)/health and safety procedures for agricultural workers.

Apart from OSH, the all-male group completed several training workshops on topics including ethics, conflict resolution, group dynamics, the seasonal agriculture workers contract, practical agricultural skills training (carried out at the Orange Hill Biotechnology Institute).

The training targetted all potential farm workers but the most recent classes were a bit different in that several new dimensions were added.

The training makes sure a pool of workers is ready when requests are made by the Canadian farms.

Over 325 Vincentians were employed this year on farms throughout Canada. In 2019, Vincentians working with the Canadian migrant farm workers’ programme sent home EC$12.9 million in remittances.
