NTRC Helping boost Online safety
Press Release
February 21, 2020

NTRC Helping boost Online safety

The National Telecommunications Regulatory Commission-NTRC- has partnered with a UK entity to offer a series of online safety workshops to locals over two days, starting on Monday, February 24.

The NTRC said in a release, that the workshops, to be held at the NIS building, aims to raise awareness of internet security, and help individuals and smaller businesses to use the internet confidently and safely.

The first workshop, to run from 8.30 a.m – noon next Monday, is the ‘Community Awareness Workshop’ that will introduce participants to methods which criminals use to commit crimes online, and strategies which can be used by Internet users in order to lessen the risk.

This workshop is targetting members of the public with little experience and/or little access to online safety information.

In the afternoon on that same day, there will be a second workshop for Small and Medium Enterprises, and Third Sector Organisations, aimed at increasing awareness of the techniques used by criminals, and the means which individuals can use to protect themselves both at home and at work and to be more vigilant.

The target group for this workshop is employees, primarily at various levels of seniority in the organisations.

The Child Protection workshop, is the first of two scheduled for February 25, from 8.30 a.m to noon, at which participants will be updated on the dangers which children and young people face while using technology, and how they are being targeted in that environment.

People who need to understand the risks posed to children online, and need tools to deal with these risks, are the ones being targetted to attend. The targetted participants therefore include teachers, parents, social workers, and NGO’s.

And from 100 a.m – 5.00 p.m also on February 25, the final workshop- the Community Awareness Workshop – will be held. This workshop will repeat the issues dealt with in the very first workshop held on February 24.

The NTRC has partnered with the UK-based ‘Get Safe Online’ for this series of ‘Get the Commonwealth Safe Online’ Workshops.

Interested persons are asked to register at the following link: https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/getsafeonlinesvg; or contact the NTRC at telephone 457-2279.
