Celebrating Bequia through art: the work and legacy of Karen Shiman
Editor: My name is Brian Blasingame, and I am reaching out to share a unique story that connects the breathtaking beauty of Bequia with the life and work of my late mother, Karen Shiman, a prolific artist whose paintings captured the spirit of the places she loved most.
Among her many works, one painting holds particular significance for Bequia—her stunning depiction of Admiralty Bay and the bustling Port Elizabeth. The painting captures the essence of the island’s charm, with its colourful vessels, serene waters, and the vibrant life that makes Bequia so special.
Karen Shiman (1941–2022) was an artist whose work and life were driven by her love for exploration, creativity, and conservation. Though she created over 2,000 pieces of art in her lifetime, she never sought public recognition for her work. Her painting of Admiralty Bay is part of a newly launched website, www.karenshiman.com, which showcases her art and celebrates her extraordinary life.
Karen’s connection to the Caribbean went beyond her art. As an avid scuba diver, she and my stepfather, Richard, explored the underwater treasures of the region, completing over 2,000 dives together. In Bonaire, they spent 14 years building a thriving coral reef habitat, now a designated reforestation site. Her painting of Bequia is yet another testament to her admiration for the islands and their vibrant cultures.
Through the website, we aim to honour Karen’s memory and her belief that small, meaningful acts can create lasting impact. We are also seeking to connect with communities and individuals tied to the locations she painted, like Bequia, to share her story and celebrate the inspiration she drew from the island’s beauty.
If this story resonates with you or your readers, I would be honoured to collaborate or share additional information, including high-resolution images of the painting. It would also be wonderful to hear if there’s someone who might recognize the vessels or setting, as Karen’s work often reflected her deep connection to the people and places she encountered. Thank you.
