Christ as Head of our Nation

EDITOR: We as a nation have progressed, but have declined righteously. I know, we have many more religions, yet as a nation we seem to lack that right living before God. Gone are the days when devotions and prayers were part of many families. Gone are the days when Sunday School was mandatory in every home and respect for church and Sundays. Today, we have become loose and lawless in our lives. The fear of God seems to have gone out the windows. Christ is no longer the head of many homes, even those who take active part in churches.

I remember my days growing up when my grandmother and my mother prayed daily for all of us. The prayer list was long, but they prayed consistently for those on the list daily. I do believe that it was their prayers that kept us today, that we have a generation who continue to serve the Lord. Sadly, this aspect is missing in many homes.

We have put emphasis on other things that we neglect that family time, where we give ourselves wholly unto God and seek his protection and guidance. The community atmosphere was different. Since every home sent their children to Sunday school and sometimes youth meetings and since there was a respect for churches, then the community was more environmentally friendly. Each child had to respect elderlies and say hello. But today it is not so. We have drifted away. We have become more self-centred.

The Lord Jesus is missing from homes and Sunday schools, and going to church is only done by few. No wonder our young men are so heartless that they kill without remorse. We no longer love as we used to. We no longer share what we have. We no longer settle our differences in a peaceful way, but instead we resort to violent means.

We truly lack good role models and Christian homes. We are religious, yet that living right where Christ becomes the head of our lives is missing. This is reflected in the poor attendance at churches and Sunday Schools and the knowledge of the bible. Other things have replaced those quality times we used to spend around the word as a family. The rise in crimes is as a result of our failure to put Christ into our lives and homes. May we return to God and His righteousness. Matthew 6:33 tells us: ‘seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all things would be added unto you’, and in Proverbs 14: 34 we are told that righteousness exalts a nation but sin is a reproach to any man.

As we would seek to celebrate another year of Independence let us put Christ back into our lives, homes, communities and the nation.
