Animal cruelty prosecutions have our support
EDITOR: There have been animal cruelty laws in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) since 1987, which sadly have been ineffective for quite some time. More recently the government are updating the animal laws in SVG to include legislation for responsible dog ownership, which we hope to see soon.
We’ve all witnessed and heard about the awful acts carried out on the defenceless animals of SVG; poisoning, beating, mutilating, burning, run over by vehicles, added to the general abuse and mistreatment.
Animals being left with no shelter from intense heat, no water, no food and not being given urgent medical attention. Well, no longer do the innocent and those that care about them have to tolerate such behaviour!
Finally, a case of animal cruelty in St Vincent has been prosecuted and the perpetrator sentenced.
On the 21st of July 2024 a 48-year-old man from Green Hill was charged with animal cruelty, after he had attacked a neighbours pig with a cutlass. The perpetrator has received a sentence of a six-month bond, which if defaulted on, he will pay $1,000.00, or receive a 4-month jail term.
He has also been ordered to pay $2,000.00 in compensation to the owner of the pig.
This has set a precedent!
The law has spoken, and further prosecutions will follow. We applaud the Royal Saint Vincent and the Grenadines Police Force; they have the full support of the VSPCA in prosecuting any further acts of animal cruelty.
Those who continue to inflict pain and cruelty on the animals of St Vincent and the Grenadines, please be aware that you risk prosecution. To those with a conscience that want to help protect innocent lives, please report these crimes to the police.
Thank you from all at The Vincentian Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (VSPCA).
