Time to end ‘second choice’ mentality for TVET certification – Education Minister
Minister of Education, Curtis King, has noted the fading negative perceptions about technical and vocational education in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) however, he notes there is still much work to be done in order to draw more students into these fields.
His comments were made at the 36th meeting of the Caribbean Association of National Training Agencies (CANTA) which is being hosted in SVG for the first time since the organization’s inception.
CANTA is a regional body created to harmonize TVET systems in member states as well as develop standards in training, assessment, certification and recognition of skills.
“This meeting is occurring at a very pivotal moment in our history, as our shared commitment with TVET coincides with a renewed thrust to dismantle long-standing stigmas associated with this very important component of our education system,” King stated.
“TVET, for too long, was relegated to the sidelines seen only as a second choice pathway for those who are perceived as less academically inclined.”
