It is rare for students from a small island state like St Vincent and the Grenadines to be voted as Student Guild President.

However, Azar Williams defied the odds, amassing 246 votes and winning by a margin of 60 votes to become president of the UWI Student-Guild at The UWI Cave Hill Campus, Barbados.

The elections were held on Thursday, March 13, 2025 at the campus where Williams, a third-year student, is pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Management with Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Two other students contended for the post.

Williams recounted how he remained patient on election day while awaiting the students’ decision.

“It was a happy moment because I was able to make history in relation to my country. In terms of Vincentian Guild presidents, from my understanding, Luke Browne was the one- and that was nearly two decades ago. It warmed my heart,” said the Guild’s president-elect.

He acknowledged that the role of president comes with numerous responsibilities, which he is ready to discharge.

“I’m currently the Public Relations Officer of the Guild, and the president of the Vincentian Student Association. These experiences have prepared me for this position,” Williams told SEARCHLIGHT.
