PM deals with Opposition Leader’s complaint over transfer of funds
Leader of the Opposition, Dr Godwin Friday has spoken out about a challenge his party has had with the transfer of money to its office, from the government.
Dr Friday aired his concerns in Parliament last Thursday, March 6, 2025, as he made his contribution to the Banking Amendment Bill, 2025.
He said the office of the Leader of the Opposition gets a quarterly transfer from the government, but the challenge is that the office cannot access the money, unless he signs as receiving the source of funds.
Friday said he had spoken to a senior member of the bank about the matter, but it was simply “brushed aside.”
“Suppose I am not here and the funds come? We have to pay bills, we have to pay people in the office.”
Prime Minister Dr Ralph Gonsalves rising to respond reminded the House that the Parliament had voted monies for the office of the Leader of the Opposition, and it was the first time he was hearing this complaint.
