OECS team exposes SVG teachers to AI learning enhancement software
Stakeholders and teachers in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG), are this week being schooled on the implementation of the OECS Programme for Educational Advancement and Relevant Learning (PEARL) – a technology tool expected to make teachers’ roles easier, and enhance learning outcomes.
A team of OECS and Ministry of Education officials will be visiting schools to observe lessons, and engage in dialogue with teachers involved in the implementation of the OECS PEARL.
OECS Commission Senior Technical Specialist for Education, Royston Emmanuel, provided a demonstration of the PEARL Learning Hub during a media briefing on Monday, March 3, 2025 to show how lesson plans can be generated using the AI software.
He said while he initially was a staunch opponent of AI in education, he believes that the technology can go leaps and bounds in creating lesson plans.
“Even when they generate the lesson plan, they can still have a chat with the AI assistant for improvements … to explain the concepts. It saves time and gives teachers practice so it is nowhere near intellectual laziness.”
The hub also has a special needs section that Emmanuel revealed came out of a suggestion by a Vincentian teacher who advocated for all category of students to be accounted for in the regional curriculum.
“So we included that at the request of teachers, that is how the feedback works … teachers can say what the accommodations are … and if they still want a little more, they can ask the AI support to explain for them.”
