Bequia teen jailed, and fined for violating traffic laws, lying to police
A teenager who drove an unlicensed and uninsured vehicle on a public road without a driver’s permit while being disqualified from driving, lied about his name and address to the police, and escaped police custody was jailed and fined.
Ronan Philgence, 18 years old, appeared at the Serious Offences Court before Senior Magistrate, Colin John on Tuesday, March 4, 2025 where he was sentenced for operating motor vehicle PZ71 without a valid license for the period February 1, 2025 – July 31, 2025; driving the vehicle without a driver’s permit; operating the vehicle without third-party insurance coverage and providing a false name to the police; and identifying himself as Ronan Ash of Camel, Bequia, on February 26, 2025 at Port Elizabeth Road in Bequia.
The facts stated in court are that on the date in question at 8:35 a.m, an officer, dressed in police uniform and stationed at the Port Elizabeth Police Station was on traffic duties about the district.
While in the vicinity of the Revenue Office, the officer saw motor vehicle PZ71 heading towards Hamilton and noticed that the vehicle’s licence was invalid.
The officer stopped the vehicle using the number one stop signal and the driver complied. The officer then informed the driver of the invalid licence, to which he responded, “Officer, the vehicle was in the garage, I just use it to drop off a wallet”.
