Time to create national biography for SVG, says Historian Dr Carter
St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) has endured several “licks and hard knocks” in its history, resulting in the creation of an interesting and “dark” history.
This was the view put forward by head of the Department of Philosophy and History at The UWI, Dr Henderson Carter who delivered the Black History Month Lecture at the Kingstown campus on Saturday, February 22, 2025.
Speaking on the topic, ‘Elevating Black History for Building and Development’, Dr Carter said is it time to explore the possibility of creating a national biography for SVG, from the 1800’s to the present century, to highlight notable figures who contributed in various ways to the country’s development.
“The UK has one…why can’t a small country like St Vincent and the Grenadines that has produced so many good, illustrious persons, not have a national biography?”
Dr Carter said he considers it is a long-term project with great value.
He pointed to historic infrastructure in SVG such as the Black Point Tunnel, Fort Charlotte, as well as church and cathedrals where contributions have been made by black workers that should be identified.
