Family dog receives big ceremonial burial
While it may be common in other countries to host funeral services for pets, it appears to have happened for the first time in St Vincent and the Grenadines.
Earlier this week, a Leeward family took to social media to show a well attended funeral service for their dog, Peaches Penelope Pierre, which was buried in a pink and white coffin near a house.
Peaches is said to have died on February 11, 2025, and was laid to rest on February 23. The family posted videos and pictures of the funeral which showed the dog laying in her coffin wearing a pink dress, a necklace, and a crown.
On top of the coffin were pink, red and white roses with key chains bearing its face, and a plaque stating “Sometimes a very special dog comes into our lives … their presence changes our hearts forever. And we call ourselves blessed for having known them”.
A funeral procession consisting of villagers in church attire led the way to to a house where a grave was already dug.
As they buried the dog, the procession placed wreathes and candles on top of the coffin while singing gospel songs.
