Southern Grenadines MP begs for Divine intervention to prevent 6th ULP term

An opposition parliamentarian is calling for divine intervention in the upcoming general elections in St Vincent and the Grenadines (SVG) to stop the Unity Labour Party from getting another term in office.

While the date for the elections is yet to be announced, the opposition New Democratic Party (NDP) has already selected its slate of candidates, and they are having regular political meetings in communities in the various constituencies.

Last Friday evening, February 14, 2025, the NDP’s ‘caravan’ moved to the Grenadines, where a political meeting was held in Union Island.

In his address at that meeting, Parliamentary Representative for the Southern Grenadines, Terrance Ollivierre made a plea for divine intervention.

“We need divine intervention to help move this government,” he stated.

“We need divine intervention, and I am asking you to pray, pray that we get rid of them.

“Come down Father and lend a hand to your people,” Ollivierre appealed.

The NDP politician spoke about the woes of the people of the southern Grenadines following the passage of Hurricane Beryl on July 1, 2024.

He also expressed that confidence that his constituents will not change their political allegiance but would remain committed to the New Democratic Party.

Ollivierre, who has been representing that constituency in Parliament for the past five consecutive electoral cycles, expressed confidence of victory in the upcoming polls.

“I don’t care who you want to bring, I batting like Nicholas Pooran, six, six, six, plenty sixes,” Ollivierre told the gathering.

Earlier in the meeting, Ollivierre said “ I hear they talking ‘bout padding up and hitting six, but I don’t care who you bring, everybody getting six.

“I done do five, and now ah going for six.”

Ollivierre also expressed dissatisfaction over the rebuilding programme in Union Island, which was ravaged by Hurricane Beryl on July, 1, 2024.

“If it wasn’t for private investors, where would we be?”

He said while some work is taking place in Ashton, other parts of Union Island remain without help.

“Nothing much was done for the people of the Southern Grenadines,” he stated.

“I have never seen so much grief on people’s faces. I have never seen so much disappointment.”

Ollivierre said contractors hired by the government to rebuild houses in the southern Grenadines have halted work, due to non payment of money.

“How do you expect them to continue to work?

“They have families to feed too. If you don’t pay the contractors, how can they pay the workers to continue the work to assist the people of the southern Grenadines ?”

Ollivierre went on to lament that in his constituency so many people have no place to live.

“People are suffering, you cannot be treating poor people like this. Why aren’t you helping the people of the southern Grenadines in order to get a better life?”

Ollivierre promised at the Friday night meeting that this time around, his margin of victory would be bigger than ever.

“The best thing you could do is call the elections now and let the people decide who they want to rule them,” Ollivierre challenged.
