Measures in place to protect witnesses says Detective
Police Station Sergeant, Bion Duncan, attached to the Major Crimes Unit (MCU), is encouraging persons who may have witnessed serious crimes, including homicides, to come forward as they can testify in court anonymously.
The detective, in a recent interview, said that a law, the Witness Anonymity and Special Measures Act of 2013, was put in place to protect a witness’s identity during criminal cases, and this can be utilized in matters before the court.
“We understand that these concerns can be real for somebody to come forward, to basically cooperate. So hence, the…powers that be saw that this can be concerning, and therefore tried to find some mechanism to basically deal with this issue,” Duncan said.
