Deputy Comptroller: Don’t blame Customs

Members of the public are being urged not to place the blame for long wait times or freight fees on the Customs and Excise Department.

This has come from Deputy Comptroller, Leroy James during a Cop Chat session on WEFM during the week of activities for International Customs Day last week.

James explained that the Customs Department enters into the goods clearance process at the final stage, after the Port Authority has completed its processes.

“Customs is not the custodian of cargo. At the Port there is the Port Authority who is the custodian, and there is Customs. So you are getting a barrel, you go to the agent, the agent will give you the documentation pertaining to the barrel. You come to the Port Authority….

“Customs only comes in after the barrel is located and we do the examination. You pay us the duty. We only become the custodian after 14 days if you refuse to clear it …”.
