Two Vincies among all-time Soca stars
Two internationally recognized Vincentian music artistes and performers have been ranked in the top 10 of a list of performers of the 101 top soca songs in history. The two are Gamal Doyle, Skinny Fabulous in the entertainment world, and Kevin Lyttle.
Skinny’s award is for the song Famalay (2021) in which he cooperated with Machel Montano and Bunji Garlin; while Lyttle’s award is for his massive global hit, Turn Me On, which took the music world by storm in 2003.
The rankings were done by a Trinidad radio station, ‘Scorch Radio’ taking 101 songs to mark the 101-day countdown to Carnival 2025 in Trinidad and Tobago starting from November, 22. A wide range of knowledgeable people in the Soca world were consulted, and a range of criteria used, including cultural impact, versatility, popularity, dance-ability, music production and lyrical content.
Among the top 10, along with the two Vincentians were Arrow from Montserrat; the hugely popular Superblue; Alison Hinds; and Rupee. Not surprisingly a hit by Soca superstar, Machel Montano along with Destra, “Turn Me On” (2003) was ranked top of the list.
Naturally, the rankings have created much debate among Soca lovers in T&T. Our heartiest congratulations to Skinny and Kevin, ensuring that Vincie music is among the best.
